Dutch kickboxing sensation Tyrone Spong’s growing reputation, as one of kickboxing’s all-time greats was further cemented at Glory 9 last night in New York. In the 16-man light heavyweight tourney, the man they call the “King of the Ring” beat the number #1, #2 and #4 ranked fighters on route to picking up a cheque for $200,000.
After a shaky start to the his opening bout against fellow Dutchman Michael Duut, which saw Spong floored with a powerful right-hand inside the first minute of the opening round, Spong quickly got off of the canvas and returned the favour delivering a thunderous right hand of his own, KO’ing his compatriot. The rest of the tournament went a lot smoother for the Dutchman as he would go on to defeat Filip Verlinden via a unanimous decision in the semi-finals and score a 16 second KO of Danyo Ilunga in the tournament final.
