Bellator 139

Bellator 139, from Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas, will be irrefutably remembered for Hisaki Kato upsetting the odds and finishing Joe Schilling with a superman punch, to stake a claim at knockout of the year.

In Kato’s Bellator debut, he shocked fans with one of the most violent finishes in the promotion’s history, when his superman punch knocked Schilling out cold.

Kato used his grappling in the first round to keep Schilling at bay, but elected to stand with ‘Stitch ’em Up’ in the second, and ended up finishing the fight pretty promptly.

There was no doubt over Schilling’s striking calibre, however, bar his own highlight finish of Melvin Manhoef, he has looked awkward in the smaller MMA gloves.

Now 2-5 in his mixed martial arts career, multiple-time world muay thai and kickboxing champion Schilling will have to weigh-up his future.

He makes his return to the GLORY ring on September 19, for Bellator: DYNAMITE and is one of the front runners to challenge Artem Levin for the middleweight gold; a bout that has been banded around for over a year.

In the main event, Cheick Kongo used his smothering wrestling and elbow strikes to best Alexander Volkov by unanimous decision.

A relentless Kongo dominated the bout with his takedowns, as ‘Drago’ spent a majority of the bout on his back, unable to offer much in terms of activity.

Volkov drops to two losses in a row, and Kongo improves to 4-2, with an apparent rematch with Vitaly Minakov potentially in the making.

In the co-main event, Dave Rickels vs. John Alessio ended in a no contest after “The Caveman” used an illegal knee to the head on a downed Alessio.

Rickels was dominating the fight, with some superb striking, however referee Rob Hinds waved off the fight as a result of the illegal attack.

Elsewhere, Pat Curran returned to winning ways with a unanimous decision over late replacement Emmanuel Sanchez. A much needed win for ‘Paddy Mike’.
