UFC president Dana White came under a great deal of scrutiny earlier this year, when releasing former welterweight title challenger, and top-10 contender Jon Fitch (24-6-1,1) from the promotion.
The UFC’s leading man insists the cut was nothing personal, stating that he felt Fitch was on the downside of his career, going 1-2-1 in his last four UFC appearances, despite winning an entertaining ‘Fight of the Night’ contest against Erick Silva.
In his first bout since being released from the UFC, Fitch lost in a under minute via a technical-submission (guillotine choke) to fellow former UFC conteder Josh Burkman, and Dana White was interested to see the how the fight played out
“I wasn’t right,” explained White. “I cut Jon Fitch, I said he went 1-2-1 since 2011, and he’s on the downside of his career. He’s 35 years old, he hasn’t looked impressive at all, but I said he’ll be a world champion at the World Series of Fighting. I said he’ll go over there and win a title… Did I think Fitch was going to win? Yeah, I thought Fitch was going to win. I said Fitch is going to wrestle-(expletive) him for three rounds and win the fight.”
He continued, “I like Josh Burkman very much, another guy from season 2 of The Ultimate Fighter. A great guy, has always been a good kid, and I’m happy for him.”
