The bill for CWFC 70 in Dublin this weekend has undergone a late change, with the bout between Jake Bostwick and Philip Mulpeter being removed from the card ahead of this afternoon’s weigh-ins.
The fight has been scrapped due to Bostwick being unable to make the 171lbs limit for his welterweight clash with the Irishman at The Helix tomorrow night.
Bostwick arrived at the CWFC hotel in Dublin yesterday (Thursday) morning, weighing 194lbs. The 24-year Englishman tipped the scales at 182lbs at 11.05am this morning but was unable to cut any further.
Subsequently, Philip Mulpeter and his camp have understandably opted not to compete under these circumstances, so the fight has unfortunately been cancelled.
New opponents were considered for both fighters – Mulpeter at welterweight, Bostwick at middleweight – but officials were unable to source suitable replacements who could be passed fit to compete by SAFE MMA on such short notice.
“This is obviously a very unfortunate situation,” said Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan. “It’s disappointing for everyone, particularly Philip Mulpeter, but also for the Cage Warriors fans who have been looking forward to this fight for a long time.
“We reacted to the situation as well as we could. We thought about new options for Philip and we even had Henry Fadipe interested in stepping in to face Jake, but neither has worked out so both guys are now without fights.
“Henry was in a five-round title fight just over a week ago in South Africa, and Jake isn’t in great shape physically either right now due to the weight-cut, so there’s no way we could give a fight like that the green light on the grounds of safety.
“It’s a blow to lose one of the most highly-anticipated fights on the card, but CWFC 70 is still stacked from top to bottom, so we’re looking forward to another exciting Dublin event tomorrow night.”
Mulpeter was on weight at 169.6lbs shortly after 1pm, and will therefore receive his full fight purse. Bostwick will not receive a purse.
The bantamweight clash between Dean Garnett and Martin Sheridan has now been moved up to the main card to fill the vacancy.
