A superfight between two dominant champions has been the holy grail of MMA since BJ Penn fought Georges St-Pierre at UFC 94.

Dana White suggested all chance of another one had vanished when Anderson Silva dropped his own middleweight belt.

‘The Spider’ was ‘the link’ in between GSP at 170 pounds and Jon Jones at 205.

However, Jones hinted that he could make a step up to fight the UFC heavyweight champion during a talk at The Gentleman’s Expo in Toronto at the weekend.

Jones is taking the rest of the year off to heal up and still has a fight with Glover Teixeira to contend with, not to mention a hotly anticipated rematch with Alexander Gustafsson.

Despite those imminent dangers in front of him, the light heavyweight champ is eyeing a potentially even bigger fight down the road.

“I’ve been really thinking about me and Cain Velasquez going at it,” he said.

“I think it’ll be huge for the sport.

“I think it would be a really entertaining fight.

“Don’t be surprised if that happens sooner rather than later.”

Jones added he’d want to add some more muscle to make a permanent jump in weight class, but the sight  of him facing off against heavyweights on a full-time basis could be a reality in a couple of years.

If Jones can see off Teixeira and Gustafsson there would probably be a dearth of fresh challengers for him at 205 pounds, making a change in weight class an appealing proposition.

Not to mention a golden box-office ticket for Dana White and co.
