It looks like UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler (pictured) will throw down with former interim king Carlos Condit according to journalist Jeremy Botter.

“Ruthless” will defend his belt for the second time at December’s UFC 194 show in Montreal as reported by Botter for Bleacher Report. Johny Hendricks against Tyron Woodley, another 170lbs scrap, is rumoured for the co-main event.

33-yaer-old Lawler, the American Top Team man, got back to action this month at UFC 189 by stopping Rory MacDonald in five rounds of bloody drama.

Condit, previously sidelined by an ACL injury, returned in May to blast through Thiago Alves in two sessions showing Muay Thai prowess on the feet.

It sets up a clash for fans to savour between two fighters who love to stand and bang.

Winning the belt from Hendricks in 2014, the champion is enjoying a renaissance to his career having beaten the likes of Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown since returning to the UFC from Strikeforce in 2012.

But Condit, a veteran at 31, has only been halted by strikes once throughout his 30-8 record and his finest wins include MacDonald, Dong Hyun Kim and Dan Hardy.

Should the Albuquerque native be the number one contender though? He has already lost to the best welterweights, such as Hendricks and Georges St-Pierre, while Woodley has moved into contention with four wins in his last five.

Whatever happens it promises to be one of the fights of the year, especially at a time of year when the UFC generally raises the bar. Stayed tuned to MMA Plus for all the latest on this story and all the other rumours and news you need to know.
