An exciting featherweight match-up have been have been announced today for the Ultimate Fighting Championships first trip to Scotland.

In bout number 1, Scotland’s Robert “The Hammer” Whiteford will meet Ireland’s Paul “Redser” Redmond in a bout which is sure to excite fans all over Scotland and Ireland, two nations known internationally for their love of mixed martial arts.

Redmond (10-5-0), who fights out of Dublin, Ireland and is the teammate of fellow UFC featherweight Neil “2Tap” Seery, comes into the fight off the back of a hard fought loss over Mirsad Bektic, having taken the fight on short notice as replacement for the injured Alan Omer. Following his defeat, Redmond vowed to put in a better performance next time around, this time with the benefit of a full training camp. The featherweight will undoubtedly be hoping that Irish fans opt to make the short journey across to Glasgow to support him on July 18.

“I think a lot of fans will travel to Scotland. It’s going to be as big as UFC Dublin but this time.in Glasgow. The crowd will be amazing and they’ll be getting behind their own fighters, I’m sure.

“I’m there to finish it. I want to get it finished before it goes to the judges. I’m out there to win and to make a statement. And to do that in Glasgow would be really special”.

Whiteford, meanwhile, trains out of The Griphouse gym in Glasgow and holds a professional record of 11-2-0. Whiteford has been out of action for more than a year, following his win over Daniel Pineda back in March 2014. From the moment UFC confirmed that it was set to host its debut event in Scotland, Whiteford made no secret of the fact that he would relish the opportunity to step inside the Octagon in front of a home crowd:

“We’re breaking boundaries everywhere in this sport and reaching new markets, and now we’re coming to Scotland. It’s going to be absolutely tremendous walking out there in front of thousands of home fans. I don’t think I have the words to do it justice, just how much it means. It’s so much more than a dream come true”.

UFC Fight Night Glasgow will take place at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Saturday, July 18 and MMA Plus will bring the latest updates on future fight announcements as we get them.
