The Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced a host of fights for UFC 187 – set to take place on Memorial Day in May – and it’s going to be big.

UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones will defend his strap against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, while Vitor Belfort is scheduled to finally get his crack at middleweight champ Chris Weidman in the co-main event.

The main event will be the first fight for Jones since his impressive performance against Daniel Cormier (which became secondary news following his positive cocaine test), and he comes up against the powerful knockout artist Johnson, who has gone 7-0 and looked devastating since the multi-weight veteran settled at LHW, and stopped Alexander Gustafsson in his most recent showing.

Elsewhere on the card Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman faces off against Brazilian Vitor Belfort – so long as the fight can remain intact having already been rescheduled 3 times.

In the Lightweight division there’s a number-one-contender contest between Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and unbeaten Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov.

‘Cowboy’ is coming off a win against former champion Benson Henderson and is riding a 7-fight win streak; while his opponent is coming back from a 12 month lay off after knee surgery.

And also on the card is a Heavyweight tussle between former champion Andre Arlovski and Travis Browne. With both fighters coming off wins and the HW division not exactly stacked at the minute both could move into the title picture with a win.

Let’s hope the event can avoid the injury plague that’s dogged the promotion recently, as it’s certainly one to look forward to if it can retain these fights.

UFC 187 is set to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 23rd.
