UFC Fight Night 57 edgar vs. swanson

In the main event of UFC Fight Night 57 #3 ranked featherweight Frankie Edgar staked a claim for the next shot at Jose Aldo’s title with a dominant performance over the #2 ranked Cub Swanson at the Frank Erwin Centre in Austin, Texas in the early hours of Sunday morning.

In the opening round Swanson would look to use his boxing to pick apart his opponent who would counter with offensive of his own, landing a number of leg kicks early on and would attempt a takedown, which was stuff by Swanson. The two fighter’s would then proceed to stand in the pocket and trade punches, with Edgar landing a nice combination, with his opponent missing with a overhand right, but land one moments later. In the closing moment of round 1 former lightweight champion Edgar would attempt and then secure a takedown to close out the round.

From the second round onwards New Jersey native Edgar would begin to exert his authoring on the fight, using his lighting quick movement combined with crisp striking and takedown’s to slowly wear down his 31-year old opponent.  In the final round Edgar would continue to pile on the pressure, countering Swanson hopeful attempts at landing something big with lighting quick flurries and would then proceed to take his still game opponent to the canvas with yet another takedown. Once on the ground and after a few more punches, Edgar would attempt a choke from an awkward angle and after slightly adjusting his positioning locked in the rear naked choke for the finish with only 0:04 to spare in the 5th round.
