UFC on Fox 14 play-by-play results

Main Card

Light Heavyweight Anthony Johnson def. Alexander Gustafsson via TKO (Round 1 – 2:15)

Gustafsson starts the fight throwing a few kicks, but immediately Rumble tried to cut off the cage and push Gustafsson into the corner. A big kick caught by Rumble and he hit a huge right hand which dropped Gustafsson in front of his home fans. Johnson smelt blood and started swinging, with a few more big shots dropping Gustafsson again, and Rumble went in for the kill landing the ground and pound to a defenceless Gustafsson to pick up the biggest win of his career. Jon Jones, you better be ready, this guy is a killer!

Middleweight Gegard Mousasi def. Dan Henderson TKO (Round 1 – 1:10)

A quick co-main event, Hendo looks for the H-bomb from the get go, but a right hand from Mousasi drops Henderson who flops to the ground and referee Leon Roberts rushes in to stop the fight. Questionable stoppage but seemed something wrong with Hendo’s left eye in the build up to the finish.

Gegard Mousasi: “I feel good. I like Dan Henderson but of course I’m happy and pleased that I won. It was a good victory. I thought it was a good stoppage. Right when he went down, I would have been able to put another punch in it but I didn’t because I thought the referee would stop it. And then I thought, well maybe they aren’t going to stop it, so I kept punching afterwards. So I think it was a good stoppage.”

Light Heavyweight Ryan Bader def. Phil Davis via Decision (split) (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Bader was the aggressor in the first round, as both men surprisingly elected to stand and trade. Neither man landed anything too significant, with Bader pushing his combinations and Davis using the leg kicks to put Bader on the back foot. Davis started to look a little stronger in the second half, as he tried to ensue in some grappling against the fence, and even managed a short takedown, as he worked for the back of Bader. Bader managed to avoid most of Davis shots well, except a flush right head kick. Bader stuffed two takedowns early in the third, and it really seemed to break the spirits of Davis who didn’t offer much in the final round. A last gasp attempt at a takedown saw the momentum allow Bader to land on top, and finish the round with a huge takedown slam.

Featherweight Sam Sicilia def. Akira Corassani via KO (Round 1 – 3:26)

Corassani started the fight showing off some very quick footwork, staying out of reach of Sicilia, who landed clean first. Both men were exchanging good shots with each other, including a huge spinning back kick miss from the Swede. However a devestating right hand knocked Corassani out cold! Goodnight Irene.

Sam Sicilia: “That’s the most comfortable I’ve ever felt in the Octagon. I really felt I had it together this time. The crowd were all giving me high fives on the way out; they just wanted to see a good fight so it was really cool. Now I’ll just stay in the gym and get somebody else – whoever next. I’d actually like to fight Oliveira. You know I usually don’t like to pick but I’ve got to start making a run and I think I could start with him. But whoever Sean says is fine too.”

Preliminary Card

Welterweight Albert Tumenov def. Nico Musoke via Decision (unanimous) (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

A contrived first round from both fighters, as it kicks off slow from both men. However when they start to get into their rhythms, they both look for bigger shots, with Musoke trying for one shot, and Tumenov loading up his combinations, including a lovely left and right which landed clean through on Musoke. Round two was another equal striking battle, with back and forth action, as the two fighters trade shots. A cut appeared on the left eye of Musoke, which came about through much cleaner strikes from Tumenov, who landed flush through on regular occasions. One of the keys to the fight was Tumenov catching the kicks of Musoke, who took to long to pull his leg back, allowing Tumenov a good two second back to land clean strikes. The flash shots of Tumenov were the difference maker, and it was very clear with the bloody mask Musoke wore.

Albert Tumenov: “Everything is good, everything is great. I’m feeling so good after the win. The plan was to move around and to jab a lot and to keep control of the cage and we did everything the way we were supposed to, according to the plan. I want to move up the rankings right now. I want to fight top fighters; top 15 at least. Specifically I would like to fight Rick Story. I have a lot of respect for him, I think he’s a good fighter and me and him would make an exciting fight; we’d put on a show.”

Welterweight Kenny Robertson def. Sultan Aliev via TKO (Round 1 – 2:42)

Robertson started with the pressure, running after Aliev with some big strikes and a quick takedown, trying to work the back. He was unable to sink in the rear naked choke, and both guys continued in a striking battle. Aliev started to look more comfortable, with Robertson swinging big with his shots, whereas Aliev tried to finish with his crisp techniques. Aliev missed a spinning back kick and Robertson made him pay with a a huge left hook to pull off an upset win.

Kenny Robertson: “I thought the fight went well. I was almost too relaxed. He hit me with a couple of knees to the body, and I was like, those don’t hurt so I had to turn it up a little bit, and everything worked out. The atmopsohere was good. I walk to the cage, I see the cage, I walk out, you know. I go back to work on Monday; I’ve got to teach those kids. And then hopefully I get another fight soon. I’ll keep on training hard, keep my cardio up – I’m not injured at all. I’d take another fight, hopefully in the next month or two or three, and I’ll be ready to go.”

Featherweight Makwan Amirkhani def. Andy Ogle via TKO (Round 1 – 0:08)

In one of the quickest finishes you will ever see in a UFC octagon, Amirkhani hit a running flying knee followed by a right uppercut on Ogle, which dropped the Brit, as Amirkhani followed up with some strikes which forced the referee to step in for the quick finish. It’s officially the fourth fastest in UFC history.

Makwan Amirkhani: “I told you, first round baby, first round. I wrote it in a book. It was wonderful; I enjoy entertaining people. Next I want the UFC to give me some time to train and to beat the hell out of these guys.”

Light Heavyweight Nikita Krylov def. Stanislav Nedkov via submission (guillotine choke) (Round 1 – 1:24)

The 77″ reach for Krylov played a huge part in the quick win for the Ukrainian fighter. Nedkov got dropped by a big right, and right knee, as Krylov looked for a d’arce choke. Nedkov then tried to work the fence, but Krylov caught Nedkov’s neck to secure a very tight guillotine and take the win.

Nikita Krylov: “There is always more responsibility when there are that many people in the crowd but I always like it when there are so many people watching me fight. Now, I’ll get home and eat a lot of food. I’m feeling good! Whatever the UFC says, we will prepare for next.”

Lightweight Mairbek Taisumov def. Anthony Christodoulou via KO (Round 2 – 0:38)

Taisumov immediately showed a difference in class between the two fighters as he landed some great clean shots to Christodoulou, including some big kicks to the left leg of the Grecian, and a couple nice spinning back kicks. He also landed a nice left, right combination that wobbled Christodoulou. And it was too much in the second as Christodoulou shot for a takedown which Taisumov scrambled, landing some crazy shots, including a big right hand, to finish the fight emphatically.

Mairbek Taisumov: “I feel great, I feel great. I’m so happy to get another win in the UFC. I will wait for the UFC to tell me what is next. I would like to fight some top divison fighter but I will wait and see.”

Catchweight (149 lbs) Mirsad Bektic def. Paul Redmond via Decision (Unanimous) (30-27, 30-27, 30-25)

Bektic immediately scored a big takedown on Redmond, and it was domination in round one from there. A few ground strikes cut up the Irishman, which by the end of the round had spread blood into both of his eyes in a very big round for Bektic. The second was almost a flash replay, with Bektic using his superior strength to control the fight, clipping Redmond with a left hook and utilising the top game on the ground, with some big strikes to a bloodied Redmond. It was a complete out-classing by Bektic by the third, after wobbling Redmond with a right, he used his smothering grappling and short strikes to take the win.

Mirsad Bektic: “I feel good you know; I won. I didn’t expect him to shoot so much. I wanted to knock him out and I hurt him a couple of times. He’s a tough guy, you know, he’s a fighter. What’s next? Whatever the UFC gives me. I want to keep on winning and just keep climbing the ladder.”

Preliminary Card (UFC Fight Pass)

Heavyweight Viktor Pešta def. Konstantin Erokhin via Decision (unanimous) (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

Flyweight Neil Seery def. Chris Beal via Decision (unanimous) (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Neil Seery: “I told you! My teammate Paul Redmond is going to do the exact same thing when he’s up now. I want to thank all the Irish fans for their support all day and all through my career. You’ve all been brilliant; I love you all.”
