The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts have today announced that Brett ‘The Spartan’ McDermott will face Marcin ‘Bane’ Lazarz for the BAMMA Light-Heavyweight Championship on April 25 when BAMMA 20 hits the Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham.

BAMMA’s 205lb crown was previously occupied by Dutchman Jason Jones who defeated Max Nunes via submission in 2013, however ‘The Villain’ has not fought since. With the title having finally been vacated, a huge career opportunity has opened up for both McDermott and Lazarz.

While it may be a premature shot for the Cumbria native, McDermott (4-1) made his BAMMA debut last December at BAMMA 17 and stunned the MMA community with his KO of UFC veteran Oli Thompson. Now signed to a long term deal with BAMMA, the Barrow Mixed Martial Arts juggernaut had the following response to news that he’d be fighting for the title:

“It’s an honor and a pleasure to be part of the BAMMA 20 fight card in Birmingham. Training has been going well and I’ll be ready for the challenge of Marcin Lazarz, all 6ft 4 of him. He’s coming all the way from Poland so I know he’s coming to the UK to fight and not make up the numbers, so all being well it should be a good battle and entertain the fans of MMA. I just hope he knows I’m in it to win it.”

Marcin Lazarz’s most recent BAMMA appearance came in 2013 against Max ‘Power’ Nunes at BAMMA 12. Having likely been ahead on the scorecards, Lazarz (7-1) suffered a TKO loss in the final round, but has since gone on to best legendary Brazilian Ricco Rodriguez, as well as Krzysztof Pietraszek, both outside of BAMMA.

“Brett looks to me like a very strong & physical fighter with some good conditioning as well,” stated Lazarz, “Stylistically, I think he is an all around MMA fighter. He’s already been in the cage with some of the best UK fighters and I expect a very hard fight from him. This will be a very good fight for the BAMMA fans and I expect to bring that belt home.”
