The United Kingdom Mixed Martial Arts Federation (UKMMAF) have announced their 2017 UK National Amateur MMA Tournament, which will take place at the BodyPower Expo on Friday May 12 and Saturday May 13.

Taking place at the NEC in Birmingham, the event will follow the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) tournament ruleset, with each weight class consisting of a single-elimination style tournament.

The range of categories open for UK amateurs ranges from bantamweight (135lbs) to super-heavyweight (+265lbs). The event is open to both male and female competitors.

Each weight category will take place in a singular day format with no more than eight competitors in a bracket, on either May 12 or 13.

The entree fee for the 2017 UK National Amateur MMA Tournament is £40 and includes entry to the BodyPower Expo and BAMMA 29, which also takes place on May 12 in Birmingham

Following on from the 2017 IMMAF European Open Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria last week, the UK are looking for the next crop of amateur talent to potentially represent the country at the 2017 IMMAF Asia Open in June.

Team UK claimed one gold medal at the recent Europeans, with Adam Amarasinghe (pictured) winning four fights to claim the bantamweight IMMAF European gold medal at the EFE Marinela Hotel.

En route to his crown, Amarasinghe defeated two-time IMMAF European silver medallist, Italian Marco Zannetti in the tournament semi-finals. In the event finals, the younger brother of legendary British fighter Dean Amasinger – head coach of NFM Windsor – defeated Portugal’s Mario Moreno by decision.

Other standout names from previous UK teams include world gold medallist Shoaib Yousaf, recent BRAVE signing Hardeep Rai and the UK’s first female gold medallist, Joanne Doyle
