Battle Arena returned to the Northants County Cricket Ground on November 23, with an evening of high octane amateur competition across A, B and C class rules.
In the main event of the evening, Daniel Bloomfield entered the cage to face off against the explosive Julian Tipping for the Battle Ground National Featherweight Championship. In a fight that lived up to it’s headline billing, Tipping favoured powerful strikes, looking to overwhelm Bloomfield with straight shots forcing him backwards. Despite superior striking, the aggressive Tipping often found himself defending the grappling assault of Bloomfield who looked to take control of the ground battle with submission attempts, regardless of who secured the takedown.
Bloomfield’s hard fought efforts on the ground may have seen him edging the scorecards, and his corner sensed the decision victory closing in. As the final round played out, Tipping looked to counter a takedown but was penalized for landing an illegal knee as Bloomfield’s shoot failed. Upon the restart, Tipping surprised on-lookeers by turning the tables on the ground and sinking in a perfect rear naked choke submission.
In the co-main event, flyweights Phil Tompkin and Andre Binic clashed for the 57kg Regional Championship. With Binic often fighting from his back, Tompkin sought to control the action from above and appeared satisfied with his gameplan for the most part. With an effort that all BJJ enthusiasts can be proud of, Binic frequently threatened with a host of arm-bar attempts throughout the entire contest. Despite Tompkin’s resistance to the hold, the constant submission attempts accumulated on the scorecards, and Binic was awarded the split-decision victory.
It took no more than two seconds for Charlie Watson to unleash a head-kick upon the face of Jonny Edghill, in what was undoubtedly the knockout of the night. The perfect connection echoed through the venue as Edghill fell back and the referee jumped in immediately. In addition to the ferocious impact, the stunned Edgill sat upright with the crowed silenced as fluid streamed from his eyes and blood flowed out from both nostrils.
The fight of the night came in the form of 185-pounders Attila Hanzel and Ben Mobbs. In a back and forth striking based encounter, both fighters claimed rounds and blood was shed as each man took their moments and pushed the action. The scorecards were finalized and the bout was declared a draw with both corners applauding.
