It has this evening emerged that Brazilian welterweight Paulo Thiago (15-8) has been released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship according to Brazil’s news outlet Combate.

X-Gym trained fighter would make an impressive start to his UFC career, picking up wins over Josh Koscheck, Jacob Volkmann and Mike Swick in his first four outings putting him on the verge of title contention.

In recent times the 33-year old Brasilia native who is also a member of the Brazilian special forces unit BOPE has been on the wrong end of 3 defeats on the bounce, losing to Brandon Thatch, Gasan Umalatov and most recently suffering unanimous decision loss to Sean Spencer in front of hometown fans at UFC Fight Night 51 last month.

It is this recent run or poor form that many believe has brought an end to Thiago’s stay in the world’s number 1 mixed martial arts promotion.
