Diego Nunes vs. Joachim Hansen- Superior Challenge featherweight championship
In the main event of Superior Challenge 11, which went down earlier this evening at the AXA Sports Center in Södertälje, Sweden; Norway’s Joachim Hansen took on Brazilian Diego Nunes for the right to be called the featherweight champion.
There was a frantic start to the opening round as the two fighters would exchange punches and hard knees which resulted in the Norwegian known as “Hellboy” being taken to the canvas before rising quickly to his feet. Moments later Nunes would take Hansen down again and would score with some punches before Hansen would scramble to his feet and take Nunes down. From there, Hansen would transition from side-control into full mount in the closing seconds of the round.
In the second stanza, X-Gym trained Nunes would score with some heavy kicks to the body of Hansen and took him down. Once on the canvas Hansen would go for a submission attempt but the Brazilian escaped. A few moments later the action would return to the feet and Nunes would land with a devastating left-hook, knocking Hansen out at the 1:51 mark to become the new Superior Challenge featherweight champion.
Ed Arthur vs. Martin Akhtar – Superior Challenge bantamweight championship
In the opening round Arthur would score a quick takedown but his opponent Akhtar would avoid any serious damage and would manage to scramble to his feet and proceed to score with a nice takedown of his own. After a few moments on the ground Arthur would return quickly to his feet, quickly securing his second takedown of the opening round before failing in an attempt at a guillotine in the closing moments of the round.
After some knees were exchanged against the fence in the opening seconds of round 2, the fight would again hit the deck with Arthur working his way to Akhtars back looking to secure a rear-naked-choke, but fails in the attempt and would instead transition to full mount, before a second failed attempt at a choke. The fight would then return to its feet and Malmo native Akhtar would sends his opponent to the canvas with a nice hook. The fight would not stay there for to long as the referee stood the two bantamweights up and would deduct a point from Akhtar for persistently elbowing Arthur to the back of the head while on the ground.
In the final round the Englishman would score an early takedown and would transition to Akhtars back, landing some punches while attempting to secure a choke but Akhtar would again fend off the attempt. The fight would return to its feet and Akhtar would connect with a nice knee to the forehead of Arthur, resulting in the Hemel mixed martial arts trained fighter again taking the fight to the ground were the two fighters would jockey for position in the closing moments of the round. The fight would go to the judges and it would be the undefeated fighter Ed Arthur who would claim the vacant Superior Challenge bantamweight title via unanimous decision.
