Derek Brunson spoils the occasion, as things don’t go to plan for returning fan favourite Lyoto Machida at UFC Fight Night 119 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Fighting in front of his home crowd, Machida had a lot at stake 28 months on from his last fight in the cage, but it was Brunson who left with the bragging rights.

It was a decent start from the returning Machida who landed on Brunson early on. However, No.7 ranked middleweight Brunson continued to march forward and look for openings.

A neatly timed counter punch from the American left “The Dragon” flat out on the canvas in front of his home supporters. This marked Brunson’s second consecutive knock-out victory since his disappointing loss to Anderson Silva.

He called out former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold shortly afterwards.

In the co-main event of the evening, Colby Covington was given the nod over Demian Maia who lost his second consecutive fight after the rather dull bout versus champion Tyron Woodley.

Maia came out firing early doors, much to the surprise of fight fans, with some excellent striking in the first round. The problem for the Brazilian however, was stamina.

Both the second and third round, the 39-year-old looked sapped of any energy and Covington knew this. Despite the striking from the American not being eye-catching, it certainly caught Maia and this was winning rounds.

Colby failed to get the stoppage but won the fight with a comfortable unanimous decision victory, continuing his ascendancy upon the welterweight division. Shortly after the fight, Colby had some words for the reigning champion.

Thiago Santos was another Brazilian to fight on the card against former Cage Warriors champion Jack Hermansson, but Santos gave the home faithful something to cheer about.

Despite the Swedish fighter’s best efforts to cover up from the charging attacks from Santos, he was knocked out for the very first time in his professional career.

“Maretta” poured on the pressure in the dying embers of the first round and landed a left hook, leading to the TKO with one second of the round remaining.

British interest in the card saw Jack Marshman face Antonio Carlos Junior in a middleweight clash. Carlos Junior stopped Marshman with 30 seconds remaining of the opening round, to extend his win streak to four in a row.

After trading punches in the early on-goings of the fight, Carlos Junior tripped Marshman with ease and attacked on the ground, patiently but effectively.

After getting into full mount, “Shoeface” rained a volley of punches from the top, forcing Marshman to give up his back as his only form of protection. This allowed Junior to work the choke and force the Welshman to tap out.

This marked Marshman’s second loss in the UFC.

The most impressive finish of the night, however, belonged to Pedro Munhoz who miraculously finished Rob Font with a guillotine from top position in the very first round.
