Cage Warriors 83 is set to go down in Newport this weekend, though the undercard will be one fight short on the night. A Welterweight fight between Shane Riley and Phil Wells will no longer take place, as Riley has been ruled medically unfit to compete.

This was set to be a rematch of a February 2016 bout between the two at Raged UK 3 in Swindon, a fight in which SVT‘s Wells (8-4) submitted Riley (5-6) inside the first minute of the fight. All told, this was the third time that the two were set to compete, and the second that Riley has had to withdraw from.

Cage Warriors attempted to find a replacement for Riley, but were unable to do so on short notice. As such, Wells has been taken off the card, and the promotion will look to match him on an upcoming Cage Warriors card.

This fight represented an opportunity for Wells to get one back over South Wales’s MAT Academy gym. In his last outing, Wells was submitted by Aaron Khalid, a MAT Academy fighter, and a team mate of Riley. However, despite words being exchanged between the two parties on social media, there will be no immediate resolution.

In addition to Wells, SVT are bringing two other Swindon-based fighters into the lions den that is the Newport Centre this weekend. Tom Enstone and Craig Rawlins are set to face Port Talbot’s Struan Croxan and Tillery Combat fighter Jack Tucker respectively on the amateur portion of the card.

The card has undergone two other alterations since its announcement last month. Former IMMAF World Champion Josh Ellis has withdrawn from his fight with Simon Maksimovic through injury, the second time that this fight has been scuppered this year. Maksimovic (1-0) instead faces France’s Nicolas Ott (0-1), who looks to bounce back from a debut defeat to Lloyd Manning at BAMMA 24. Elsewhere, Mason Jones‘s opportunity to make his professional debut hangs in the balance, as Brett Hassett (2-2) has been ruled out with injury. The promotion are actively seeking a replacement for this Lightweight professional card opener.
