MMA PLUS has learned that kickboxing legend and mixed martial arts standout Tyrone Spong will be competing in a yet to be announced bout on UK soil in 2015.

With a win/loss record of 74-7, including 46 knockouts, the Suriname born ‘King of the Ring’ is best known for his kickboxing exploits that saw him conquer several weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight en route to becoming one of the most accomplished fighters in the sport today.

In 2013 Spong headlined the unprecedented Glory 5 event that brought the major kickboxing promotion to London for the first time. Spong faced three-time K-1 World Grand Prix winner Remy Bonjasky at the ExCel Arena, and knocked out the legendary veteran with a right hook in the second round.

Through 2011 and 2014 Spong solidified his reputation as one of the most feared strikers in the sport with ten successive wins, in addition to the Glory 95kg Slam Tournament that he conquered with a first round KO victory following two previous victories that same night in New York City.

The 29-year-old reached the finals of the Glory Light Heavyweight World Championship Tournament in 2014, however suffered a broken leg during the championship bout against Gökhan Saki in Istanbul, Turkey.

Most recently, Spong returned from the horrific leg injury to make his professional heavyweight boxing debut in Germany where any pent up frustration was fiercely expelled with a mighty right hand, in typical Spong fashion, that broke his opponent early in the first round.

Having joined the renown Blackzilians fight team in Florida, alongside team mates Alistair Overeem, Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort, Spong made his anticipated mixed martial arts debut in 2012 with a first round knockout under the banner of the World Series of Fighting, and claimed victory in his second contest by way of unanimous decision the following year.

Joe Long of Fighters Inc confirmed Spong’s plans to fight in the UK this year when contacted by MMA PLUS:

“As you may know Fighters Inc promoted the London Glory Show in 2013 which Tyrone headlined and was a pleasure to work with. I have worked closely with his team over the years and I’m excited that Tyrone will be back in the UK and competing real soon, one thing is for sure, it will be explosive!”

With dedicated aims for continued success across the three forms of professional combat, it’s currently unknown as to which discipline Spong will compete in when he hits the UK, but MMA PLUS will keep you updated on the story as it developments.
