#2 ranked middleweight fighter Vitor Belfort has called out Chael Sonnen, and challenged him in a catchweight bout.
Sonnen is booked to fight Brazilian fan-favourite Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua on August 17 in the man event of UFC on Fox Sports1 in Boston, Massachusetts. However, he showed an interest in meeting Belfort after the challenge was issued on this week’s episode of UFC Tonight.
The challenge by ‘The Phenom’ essentially said two things: how confident Belfort currently is, and that a fight with Sonnen is still a huge draw. Sonnen said that if the fight was to take place, it would have to happen in Las Vegas, which would raise questions over Belfort’s use of testosterone replacement therapy, that hasn’t been an issue when fighting in Brazil.
Belfort reignited his career recently by knocking out British sharpshooter Michael Bisping and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, both in impressive fashion.
