South Africa’s Extreme Fighting Championship today announced that British based South African Fraser Opie (11-5) will challenge Gideon Drotschie (4-0) for the ‘Juggernaut’s’ light-heavyweight championship at EFC 25.
A multi promotional champion, Opie (pictured) has claimed belts under the banners of Fight UK and Cage Contender. ‘The Omen’ most recently made his long awaited EFC debut with a knockout victory against Mohamed Ali at EFC 22 in August, having previously defeated former UFC contender Ivan Salaverry in July of 2012. ‘The Omen’ has never had a fight go to the judges, and despite having only lost by submission, displayed a highly developed ground game when finishing Dan Edwards with a rear-naked-choke at Fight UK 6 in February, 2012.
Fighting out of Northampton’s BST Gym, Opie challenges with a significant experience advantage in comparison to the reigning champion. However, Drotschie is running with momentum of his own, having won the title at EFC 20 in June by submitting Danie van Heerden with a third round keylock. Despite fewer bouts, Drotschie is also yet to go to the distance with two KO victories accompanied by a pair of submissions.
Drotschie tweeted: “And now I shall begin my streak with the belt @EFCAFRICA!! Can’t wait 2 fight again I’m hungry!!”
As Africa’s leading MMA promotion, EFC 25 takes place in Cape Town, South Africa on Nov 7.
