Welterweight UFC prospect Gunnar Nelson (11-0-1) dodged death over the weekend, having escaped a potentially fatal car crash with minor injuries, revealed exclusively by MMAViking.com.
With Nelson in the passenger seat, the vehicle was carrying four passengers when it left the icy road and rolled down a hill, narrowly avoiding the strong current of an Icelandic river.
Father and manager of the BJJ prodigy, Halli Nelson explained:
“The pickup he was in went of the icy road and rolled down the hill 3-4 times.
“Gunnar is fine but he had to have some stitches in his arm.
“It (the vehicle) ended up on it’s wheels in Þjórsá, this is Iceland’s longest river. It’s a glacier river with very hard current. If the car had gone one meter further into the river it would have hit deep water and the current would have taken it.
“If they had gone off roads few meters before or later it would have been much worse and they would also have gone in the river.”

With all passengers having escaped with little more than scratches, Nelson is expect to once again start training soon, having most recently earned his second UFC victory by way of unanimous decision back in February when he faced Brazilian Jorge Santiago at UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs McDonald in London, England.
