With UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones expected to ease through his next fight, the heat is already building with potential future challenger Daniel Cormier.

Jones (19-1) has been untouchable since bursting onto the MMA scene in 2008. He’s yet to encounter any significant problems in his fighting career but, on paper, Cormier (12-0) offers a serious threat to ‘Bones’, and the two have been verbally sparring for some time now.

Cormier, the former Strikeforce heavyweight phenom, is an elite wrestler, with enough power in his hands to put any light heavyweight on the mat. When Jones recently criticised ‘DC’s’ reach and cardio, the former Olympian fired back with more comments that continued to fuel the fire between the two.

Cormier said: “When I hear his quote, it’s like a 16-year-old girl. Jon Jones, grow up, bud. We’re going to fight regardless of how you feel. And when we do and I’m cutting the line and you might as well pull the guard because I’m taking you down.”

With Cormier’s teammate Cain Velasquez at the helm of the UFC’s heavyweight division, Cormier is expected to drop down to light heavyweight after his next couple of fights, which will put him on a collision course with Jones.
