Three time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen retired from professional MMA competition in June following a failed drug test administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on May 24. Post retirement, it was then revealed that the American failed a second random test, of which was conducted on June 5. As a result, Sonnen found himself dismissed and fired by the UFC and FOX from his broadcast analyst role. Sonnen has failed three drug tests throughout his career, but explains that his use of the substances was down to medical reasons.
In an official statement, the promotion explained, “The UFC and FOX Sports organizations announced today the termination of their respective broadcasting services agreements with analyst Chael Sonnen. This decision comes in light of Sonnen failing a second test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission for banned substances in June. Sonnen was previously under temporary suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing an initial test conducted in May.”
In the aftermath, Ultimate Fighter Season 17 winner and undefeated welterweight Kelvin Gastelum (9-0) has responded with support for his former mentor, Sonnen, who featured as the head coach of Team Sonnen aka ‘Team Darkside’ on TUF 17 .
