After a defeat to Josh Barnett on Saturday, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (16-8) has been matched with Alistair Overeem (36-13, 1NC) in his next fight.
Overeem (pictured) is coming off back-to-back losses, while Mir has ccome up short his last three fights in a row, including defeats to Junior dos Santos, Daniel Cormier and most recently Josh Barnett via TKO at UFC 164.
Overeem’s slide began after returning from a suspension, when he suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Brazilian giant Antonio ‘BIgfoot’ Silva in February. The skid continued in his most recent visit to the octagon, which ended in a TKO upset to Travis Browne last month.
The up coming bout, which is set to take place at UFC 167 in November, will put the lethal striking of ‘The Reem’ against the dangerous submissions of Mir. A win is crucial for both fighters, particularly If Overeem hopes to get the big fights he was looking for when he signed with the UFC, and if Mir hopes to cement his legitimacy as a top heavyweight contender.
