Bisping, Romero

The never-ending saga between middleweight giants Yoel Romero and Michael Bisping continues as the Cuban labels himself as the “People’s champ” on Twitter.

Dana White‘s announcement of Romero being next in line to face “The Count” added fuel to the fire after the fight has been pegged back allowing UFC legend Georges St-Pierre to go for the middleweight title instead, in his highly anticipated comeback.

The ongoing rivalry between Bisping and Romero first started when “The Soldier Of God” called out the 185lb champion on Twitter at the end of January after White announced that Romero would be the next challenger to the Mancunian’s title.

This was followed up with what has to be described as the most ingenious ploy to wind a fellow athlete up in the history of the sport. Yoel created a crowd funder for “Bisping’s medical expenses and retirement party” hinting that the Cuban was going to hurt him and end the Brit’s career.

Bisping responded in typical style to the Cuban disregarding his opponent and accusing his rival of being the one that fears the potential match-up.

This continued with a barrage of insults from “The Count” on how Romero is a “cheater,” a recurrent theme throughout talk between the two. He goes on to explain that he doesn’t deserve the shot against the title holder. Bisping has, of course, fought against opponents in the past that have been convicted of illegal substance use.

Another moment of genius was sparked from the 39-year-old when he unexpectedly phoned into Michael Bisping’s show exclaiming “Hey Mike! Stop running man!” To which “The Count” replied “Have you stopped sh–ting yourself yet? Lay off the steroids. Spell steroid for me.”

Unfortunately, to the disappointment of fans, that’s as much as we hear of the argument with both fighters talking over each other before Romero hangs up.

However, despite rising tensions between the pair and the fight generating hype, with Georges St-Pierre making his highly anticipated return, the fight with Romero has been put on standby. We now see the Canadian with the chance of claiming the middleweight belt. What seemed a fantasy match-up between the pair is now a reality.

The news of the mega-fight between “Rush” and “The Count” received mixed reactions with many fans disgruntled that Romero wasn’t granted his title shot whilst some are understandably excited to see GSP return to the ring after a three and a half year hiatus.

Whilst there is no doubting the pedigree of both fighters in the match-up it has understandably left fans and Romero himself upset about the situation after being promised his long-awaited title shot. Not many can deny Romero deserves the chance with notable wins over Jacare Souza, Chris Weidman and Derek Brunson.

It took a while for the Florida native to reply to the situation himself but upon being questioned of the title shot in an interview with Flocombat he insisted “It should be now. Of course I am going to wait because I should be champion right now.

“My fight with Bisping will happen eventually. Even if Bisping loses to GSP, I will defeat GSP and offer a fight to Bisping because we have unfinished business.”

The latest action taken on Twitter by either athlete is that of Romero who after receiving immense support from UFC fans around the world, has named himself “Peoples Champ”. This was followed with yet another retweet on the theory that Bisping is avoiding the number one contender after Bisping claimed GSP is a “good warm-up fight for Romero.”

Whilst a fight between the pair seems inevitable at some stage, a question looms over when the fight is eventually going to happen. Not only this but if Bisping will stick to his word of fighting Romero just six weeks after Georges St. Pierre.
