Can Tom Duquesnoy become BAMMA's first two-weight world champion?

Many a time we see Europe’s top prospects come up short against stylistically different American fighters. At UFC 216, this was no different. Tom Duquesnoy, one of Europe’s most prized possessions in the sport fell short when pitted against Cody Stamann, a former Collegiate wrestler. The big question now is, where does the former BAMMA champion go next?

The 24-year-old entered the fight as a slight favourite after an impressive finish over Patrick Williams in his Octagon debut at UFC on Fox 24. With both fighters boasting equally impressive records of 15-1, however, the Frenchman clearly had his work cut out for him.

After a dominant first round from ‘Firekid’, the fight was panning out the way many expected it to. Stamann was visibly struggling towards the end of the first round and a stoppage looked on the cards.

Stamann found himself in his element in the second round, landing numerous elbows and punches from the ground. With Duquesnoy trying too hard for the head-kick, Stamann took advantage and thwarted the Frenchman’s efforts.

In the third, “The Spartan” followed up from his impressive second round by pushing the fight, forcing Duquesnoy on the defensive. Despite a late takedown from Duquesnoy, it was too little, too late, losing by split decision.

After an eye-catching display on his UFC debut, it’s far from over for Duquesnoy who still remains a potential star at the age of 24. Now is the time to nurture him. In the French prospect we have a man who is happy to stand and trade like most European fighters. Give him a fellow striker. Someone who won’t thwart efforts with wrestling.

An ideal opponent for Duquesnoy would be Andre “The Asian Sensation” Soukhamthath. Having just fought in August in a second consecutive split decision loss, he will be eager for his first win and the match-up would provide both with a chance to get back on track, whilst seeing what level both are at.
