Cage Warriors Academy: Wales

Cage Warriors returns to Newport next month, with a card featuring many of Wales’ up and coming fighters.

The Cage Warriors Academy show, which takes place on March 4, 2017 and sees Welterweights Phil Wells (8-3) and Aaron Khalid (5-2) collide in the main event.

Taking place at the Newport Centre in South Wales, the show will not be televised, due to a scheduling conflict with Cage Warriors 81, which takes place the same evening in Dublin, Ireland.

Swindon’s Wells enters this contest coming off of a victory in his last outing, defeating Toby Hartman at Cage Warriors 79. On that same show, Aaron Khalid also featured, beating Adam Proctor by submission, and extending his winning streak to three in the process.

A teammate of UFC fighter Jack Marshman, Tillery Combat MMA’s Jack Shore (3-0) faces Greek fighter Alexandros Gerolimatos (2-0) in the evening’s co-feature. Both men are undefeated in the Featherweight division, Shore having won all three of his professional fights last year under the Cage Warriors banner (his debut fight was under the Pain Pit, who later became Cage Warriors Wales). Gerolimatos meanwhile fights outside of Greece for the first time in his career.

At Bantamweight, Tillery Combat MMA fighter Joe Orrey (9-8) faces Damo “Yeti” Weeden (5-6), who fights out of Bournemouth’s Phoenix MMA. Weeden was originally set to fight undefeated prospect Josh Reed (6-0) in the main event, but the Welshman was forced to withdraw. Orrey is no easy replacement for Weeden though, having previously fought several tough fighters including Brett Johns, James Brum and Phil Raeburn.

Elsewhere on the card, Richard “Frango” Williams (3-0) puts his unbeaten record on the line against Team Mahico fighter Dan Good (1-2) in a Lightweight contest, whilst Rikki “Flying” Fortuna (4-4) faces Terry Doyle (4-5) in the Featherweight division.

Rounding off the professional main card is a Lightweight bout between Craig Bale (1-3) and Bridgend’s Josh Ellis (0-0), who won a gold medal at lightweight at the 2015 IMMAF World Championships. Finally, Ethan Charlesworth and Nathan Ford make their professional debuts at 145 lbs.

The show also features several amateur bouts on the preliminary portion of the card.
